Expertise and Disciplines

The Disciplines

Margin in early years groups is shaped by at least ten different forces operating at the same time: funded hour economics, fee architecture, workforce cost, regulatory compliance, quality frameworks, safeguarding governance, estates risk, technology architecture, leadership capability, and the dynamics of the market you operate in. Most advisory firms cover two or three of these. Litus covers all of them, through a managed network of senior specialists who have operated in each discipline at the scale your group is dealing with.

Founder and Managing Director

Dane Hardie

Dane has spent 25 years in early years, regulated children’s services, SaaS and PE-backed operations. He led the turnaround at Family First Day Nurseries, a PE-backed group with a £98m P&L and 100+ settings, delivering £3.7m of EBITDA growth in 12 months and £1.2m of AI-driven cost savings. Before that he grew revenue at Fennies from a standing start to £4.73m and £3.93m in compound growth across successive roles, and scaled Pebble, an early years SaaS platform, from seed to Series A with 100% year-on-year revenue growth.

He co-owns Claygate Montessori School, an Ofsted Outstanding setting, and chairs the Finance, Governance and Safeguarding Committees at Skylarks, a SEND charity. He has worked in the sector from every angle, as a group operator, a technology vendor, an investor-side adviser, a regulator-facing leader and a proprietor.

Litus Advisory exists because the early years sector needs advisory that starts with how the operations work, not how the spreadsheet looks. Every engagement Dane leads draws on that operational foundation, supported by the specialist disciplines the engagement requires.

The Network

Litus operates through a managed network of senior specialists, each with deep experience in a specific discipline within the early years sector. Every associate is selected against published professional standards for the depth of their expertise, their ability to operate at the level the engagement requires, and their track record of delivery in the sector. Dane leads every engagement and acts as the quality gate across the full scope of work.

The network gives clients access to the breadth of a large firm with the accountability of a focused advisory practice. No engagement is staffed with generalists. Every discipline is covered by someone who has spent their career in it.

  • Operational Strategy and Growth

Multi-site nursery group operations at the scale where complexity compounds. Acquisitions, restructuring, new site development, and the operational infrastructure that holds a portfolio of 10 to 100+ settings together. This is where most advisory falls short: understanding how the operations at setting level connect to the commercial model at group level.

  • Funding, Fees and Financial Performance

Cost per funded hour modelling, funded rate analysis, fee architecture design, and the financial benchmarking that tells you whether your group is making or losing money on every session it delivers. The gap between what local authorities pay and what it costs to deliver a funded hour is where most margin is won or lost. This discipline exists to close that gap.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Ofsted Readiness

Inspection preparation, recovery planning, quality audits, and the distance between what regulatory compliance demands and what operational practice delivers. Led by professionals with direct Ofsted inspection experience who understand what inspectors look for, how the evaluation framework operates, and what it takes to move a setting from requires improvement to good or from good to outstanding.

  • Early Years Quality and Curriculum

Pedagogy, curriculum design, quality frameworks, and the standards that define what outstanding practice looks like at setting level. Assessment approaches, observation methodology, continuous improvement, and the connection between quality of provision and the commercial outcomes it drives. High quality settings retain families. Retention drives occupancy. Occupancy drives margin.

  • Safeguarding, SEND and Inclusion

Designated safeguarding leadership, SEND coordination, inclusion strategy, and the governance structures that protect children and organisations. This is the discipline where the consequences of getting it wrong are highest and where the regulatory, reputational and human cost of weak governance is unrecoverable. Specialist expertise, not a compliance checkbox.

  • Education Estates and Risk

The structural gap between safeguarding responsibility and operational control over the physical environment. Estates assessment, contractor governance, facilities management, building compliance, and capital expenditure risk. Where the duty of care for children meets the condition of the buildings they spend their days in.

  • Leadership, Coaching and Management Development

Building and developing the leadership teams that run nursery groups, from area manager capability through to board-level succession. Coaching, mentoring, and the management infrastructure that sustains performance after the consultants leave. The most common constraint on growth in multi-site groups is not capital or regulation. It is leadership capacity.

  • Technology and Systems

Nursery management systems, safeguarding platforms, workforce scheduling tools, parent engagement technology, and the integrations that connect them. Selection, implementation, and the architecture that supports growth rather than constraining it. Litus has direct experience with every major platform in the sector and understands how technology decisions made at 10 settings play out at 50.

  • International Markets and European Operations

Market entry strategy for European and international early years markets. Cross-border operational models, regulatory frameworks outside the UK, and the commercial realities of expanding childcare provision into new geographies. Covering 29 European markets with operational experience in Spain, Australia, and multi-country expansion.

  • Market Entry and Regulatory Navigation

New market development, regulatory navigation, and the strategic assessment of whether and how to enter new segments of the early years market. From local authority relationships and maintained sector dynamics through to acquisitive growth strategy and the due diligence that supports it.

Service Lines
  • Margin Diagnostic

A fixed-price, productised engagement that walks the P&L across five areas: funded hour economics, fee architecture, occupancy and ratios, workforce cost, and central overhead. Two to four weeks depending on group size. The output is a board-ready report with sized opportunities and a sequenced plan for capturing them.

  • Value Creation Programmes

Retained engagement following the diagnostic, working alongside the management team to execute the value creation plan. Measured in EBITDA impact, not hours billed. Staffed with whichever disciplines the engagement requires from across the network.

  • Commercial Due Diligence

Operator-led CDD for investors acquiring or exiting early years groups. Staffed with specialist disciplines covering regulatory compliance, safeguarding governance, estates risk, technology architecture, and workforce stability alongside the commercial and operational assessment.
